One of our 2012 Milestones: A Latino in Spain, Strengthening the Bridge.

Open the NY Times or any global media site and we read of the economic challenges worldwide, particularly in Spain… But on a recent journey though Spain, graciously hosted by Fundacion Carolina, I discovered that this gorgeous country is filled with culture, rich cuisine, warm hospitality and a deep-rooted desire to progress into the 21st gloPrincebal economy.

A motley group of 7 Hispanic Americans hailing from different industries and nationalities, as well as very diverse backgrounds, convene in Madrid in early December with the sole mission of learning more and strengthening the bridge between the Latinos in Spain and The United States.

From a Royal visit including a private and intellectual conversation with Felipe, Prince of Asturias in the residential palace outside of Madrid, where we discussed immigration, US elections, technology, Latino Identity amongst many other topics!  Several dialogues and presentations from the Congress and various agencies shed light on this new democracy (Spain has been a democracy only since 1978!) and their growing pains.  Yes, the Spanish folks are protesting and expressing their dissatisfaction with the current economic issues, of which high unemployment is playing center stage.  But I also noticed the Christmas spirit with traditional lit decorations, trees and music, with Spaniards out and about, filling the Plazas and keeping the street vendors busy!  Well known fact: there are two sides to every story…

In the spirit of camaraderie, we enjoyed breaking bread, eh, tapas and vino!  We fell deeply in food lust with stuffed champiniones,  manchego cheese and Iberico Jamon…. In Valencia, we experienced food nirvana, with award-winning paella that stills gives me pause weeks later…   Walking the markets and stores emphasized the role these culinary delicacies play in daily life: unity, community and enjoyment.

As we traveled on the AVE, high speed train from Madrid to Valencia, in less than 2 hours, we realized the well-kept secret that is Spain… Several of the top 10 infrastructure companies are Spanish, innovative incubators, advanced media & graphic art & TV studios, phenomenal international port and multiple multinational corporations.  The culture, the art, the cuisine, the warm spirited people…Oh Spain, my friend, I will return and be assured that you have a dedicated and awed ambassador!
