LEDC is a HUD certified non-profit counseling agency, meeting the individual needs to guide first-time homebuyers and homeowners facing foreclosure towards stable homeownership. Our goal is to equip the Latino community with the skills and financial tools to create a better future for their families. Participants in our programs learn how to buy and stay in their homes as well as take control of their decisions.

2012 Baltimore Community Fellows Application Now Open

OSI-Baltimore is now accepting applications for the 2012 class of Baltimore Community Fellows!

We are pleased to announce that this year there will be two new fellowships in addition to the usual ten slots. The two new fellowships, sponsored by the Open Society Foundations’ Campaign for Black Male Achievement, will support individuals working with black men and boys in the areas of education, family, and work.

The Baltimore Community Fellowships program seeks dynamic activists and social entrepreneurs interested in implementing projects that address problems in underserved communities in Baltimore city. For fellowships beginning in the fall of 2012, awards are in the amount of $60,000 over 18 months.

Hispanic Business Community Gathers in Unity for Dignity at Annual Annapolis Legislative Reception

BALTIMORE (February 2, 2012) Last night, the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MDHCC), in partnership with the Baltimore Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Montgomery County held their Annual Legislative Reception which aimed to gather the region’s most prominent and progressive business leaders, government representatives and concerned Marylanders to discuss their combined legislative agenda and the impact of certain issues on the local Hispanic community. The event was a huge success, with over 110 people in attendance including Governor Martin O’Malley, Maria Martinez (Chair The Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affiairs), Veronica Cool (Vice President with Wells Fargo & Chair of the MDHCC), Alexander Sanchez, Secretary of the Department of Labor and Licensing as well as visiting dignitaries from the Embassies and Consuls of Latin American nations including Mexico, Colombia and El Salvador.

The Maryland Hispanic Chamber in a show of strong solidarity with its fellow Hispanic Chambers shed light and put forth a legislative agenda designed to address the importance and relevance of the following issues:

Taxes: The reality that businesses need a stable, predictable, and fair environment in which to thrive, with a particularly relevance and importance for small businesses.

Small Business Support: The need for Maryland entrepreneurs to be encouraged to develop their own businesses creating sustainable jobs for other residents and improving the State’s overall economy. Including a strong show of support on behalf of the Chambers for the Governor’s Small Business Commission recommendation to set aside certain procurement opportunities of a specified size to the Small Business Reserve Program.

Minority Business Enterprises: The need and support for the re-authorization of the MBE/WBE program.

Workforce Development and Education: The need to support programs that help Maryland residents develop the skills necessary to be gainfully employed in Maryland continue to be supported and enhanced.
Immigrant Discrimination: That the Chamber would not support any legislation that disproportionately targets foreign born residents of Maryland. The Chambers collectively feel that a worker’s immigration status is a matter of federal law and should be left to the federal government to enforce.

Health Care Act: The need to support legislation related to the implementation and protection of the federal Affordable Health Care Act and ensure that the costs of implementation of the Act have a minimal impact on small businesses in the state. The legislation (SB 238, SB 234 and SB 206) will ensure more people become insured and provide tax benefits for businesses to provide health care to their employees.

The Chamber understands and agrees that making sure these issues are and remain a priority will allow the Maryland Hispanic and all of the Greater Maryland community to continue to prosper and grow.
